" A 3 year old could do it"

A criticism often levelled at  modern contemporary, and abstract art in particular, is the public's perception of art and the conclusion that "a three year old could do that!"
Unlike , say, a piece of music that we hear and accept that we either "like" or "dislike"  without analysing why that should be, we constantly feel that we have to immediately recognise a subject to understand it and quite often are not prepared to spend time and gain more from a piece of art.
Anyway here's a piece of art that is by a three year old - but I kinda wish that I'd done it!!!

Night Train

A new painting - acrylic on canvas "Night Train". The title comes from an album originally recorded by Oscar Peterson  in 1962 and conjures up an image of travelling through the night as you catch fleeting glimpses of the landscape.

Exhibition visit

This weekend I attended the private view of an exhibition of work by the Hastings based artist Peter Waldron, with a selection of worked produced at his studio on the Greek island of Crete including paintings and drawings from the new "Totemakia" series.
This was a well attended event on a wet and stormy night and gave me the chance to meet the artist and his wife Lois. His work features in the November 2013 edition of "Coast" magazine and you can see more of his work on www.peterwaldron.co.uk
Thanks to Anthony and Rose for their kind invitation, the exhibition runs until the 20th. of November. For more details www.anthonyhepworth.com

Greek Island Hopping

Glass bottom boat passing Kavos beach
Returned to Rhodes recently to a small village called Pefkos. Even in late September the weather was really good and the island doesn't seem to have suffered much with the economic situation across the rest of Greece. Once again I've made some sketches in a small book and with photographs and notes will start some more acrylic on canvas paintings. The sunsets over the bay were particularly stunning.

Arts weekend

A couple of events this last weekend in the Bristol area of note.
The Open Studios at BV Studios in Bristol was really interesting. I met up with a few of the artists but due to time constraints was unable to see as much as I'd hoped. Thanks to all the artists taking part especially the invitation from Angie Kenber, it was good to meet up again. You can see Angie's work on her website www.angiekenber.co.uk
Despite the rainy weather the Totterdown Music festival was really good with most people forced to play indoors at various venues. My friend David Brown was playing a short set of his self-penned Country/Rock style of music at the Shakespeare pub. Check out David's work at his website www.theshrinks.com
(If either websites decide not to show on these links, which annoyingly sometimes happens, Google either Angie Kenber or "The Shrinks").

Kassiopi paintings

"Blue 7" (Sonny Rollins)
A couple of new paintings produced from sketches on my recent visit to Kassiopi on Corfu, the titles are from the vivid colours of the island and the jazz music which also inspired them with the musicians credited.

Corfu Spring

Another visit to Corfu, this time staying in the small town of Kassiopi in the North East of the island.

I met the artist Richard Hewlett who had appeared in a TV documentary about people living on the island. We got into conversation and he kindly invited me to his studio in the hills behind Kassiopi, but unfortunately not having a car I had to decline. So maybe next time!
You can see some of his work at his website www.richardhewlett.co.uk

From sketches that I made I'll continue with my "Blue" series of paintings, inspired by the clear skies and turquoise sea.
